Travel
Documents and Visas:
Make sure the return date of your trip is at least 6 months
prior to the expiration date on your passport. If you
hold a European passport, you should not require a visa, but
the regulations change from time to time, so check with your
closest Brazilian embassy.
-
Visitors from the USA, Canada, New-Zealand and Australia,
Brazil has a reciprocity rule, therefor if you require Brazilians
to get a visa, you will have to obtain one yourself to visit
Brazil. You can get it directly from your closest Brazilian
Embassy or Consulate, either via mail or personally (usually
faster). Call or email us if you need help.

Money:
-
Currency: Brazilian Real - R$
For
today's rate, click on the currency converter:
-
Credit Cards : Visa and MasterCard are accepted in
SOME restaurants and shops.
-
Cash & Change : Cash
is always more convenient and better accepted. Also
if you need to exchange foreign currency to Reais, we recommend
you do it in the airport in Sao Paulo or in Fortaleza Airport
when you get there, when you go thru the gates in the arrivals,
make a right inside the main hall of the airport and you will
see 2 change bureaus, you can choose either. If possible ask
for small bills since stores usually don't have much change.
-
Travellers' checks : Forget
about these, almost no-one accepts them
-
ATM : There
are very few automatic tellers along the way, so
plan on taking enough money for your trip prior to leaving
Fortaleza or Cumbuco. You can get up to R$ 1,000 per day
per international card. There are 2 ATM's located on the
ground floor of the airport (parking) : as you walk out
of the "Arrivals", take the escalator down to the
parking level and you will find automatic tellers on each
side. There is an ATM located 15 km from Prea, in Jijoca,
it is open on business days and operates during banking hours.
Plan on spending at least 2 hours to get there and back. Don't
be surprised if it is out of order, this happens, in this
case you will have to wait in line for 1 to 3 hours to get
cash from the cashier through calling Visa internationally.

Voltage
and electronic equipment:
The
voltage in North-East Brazil is 220 Volts, as in most European
countries, (110 V. in the USA).
Both
European and American style plugs fit in the standard
Brazilian sockets but you should check your electronics for
input voltage before using them.
Tipping:
Standard
tip is 10% but... it is up to you. Some restaurants automatically
include the 10% so check your bill before paying.
